Police have concerns for a 22-year-old Upper Hut man who failed to return from a day trip into the Tararua Forest Park.

He had walked to a high point called Angle Knob near Jumbo Hut situated in the headwaters of the Atiwhakatu River.

He had lost a dog at that location on the weekend and was concerned for its welfare.

There is heavy snow in the area but weather conditions were favourable overnight.

He is believed to be well equipped, but not for an overnight stay in an alpine environment.

Police are concerned that he may have left one of the main walking routes to look for his dog.

A helicopter has been deployed to look for the man.
