Offers close on Placemakers site

Tauranga City Council staff are today evaluating offers made on the former Placemakers site after the deadline closed overnight.

The deadline for offers to purchase the 7640m2 Marsh Street site, worth more than $3million, closed at 5pm on Thursday.

Council property manager Anthony Averill told SunLive this morning he did not have a final count on how many offers had been made.

'We had a couple of offers over the last week or two but then different ones keep coming. We put a deadline on it and wanted all the offers on the table by the end of yesterday.”

'I have got a meeting with my team mid-afternoon today,” says Anthony.

'We are going to be going through the offers that we have got and then working with a recommendation. There's not likely to be anything announced today.”

He is expecting conditional offers.

'It would be nice to have an unconditional one, but we will see what happens today.”

The Placemakers site is one of dozens of properties being sold by TCC as part of the Ten Year Plan.

Residents opposing the Countdown supermarket development proposal in Bureta Park said last year the Placemakers' site is a better option for the supermarket.

Anthony did not know if any supermarket offers have been received.

Great news, lets get it soldand move on to the next non performing "asset" I hope the proceeds are being used to repay debt. PLease don't even think about buying anything until you get the debt down and maintenance of core assets like drainage sorted out.

Debt reduction. Really?

Debt reduction is what you and I would do - never an issue. Alas, commonsense has yet to become an established political attribute.

Chapel Street retail

Hopefully the successful purchaser is aligned to the existing chapel Street shops and cafes - possibly a great opportunity to improve entry and exit points. Watch out in regard the proceeds of any sale, knowing that we have a select few looking to siphon off ratepayer funds to subsidize their marine precinct dreams in the face of urgent storm-water enhancements required city wide!
