UPDATED 3.07PM: Matthew Smith has been named as the 10-year-old boy who died after being receiving an electric shock while playing in the garage of a Rotorua home.

It is understood Matthew was playing with a hair dryer or hair straighteners in the Mount View Drive home around 6pm on Monday night when he was electrocuted.

Emergency services were called to the incident but were unable to resuscitate the child.

A St John Ambulance spokesperson says Matthew was rushed to Rotorua Hospital where all attempts to revive him failed.

Police say there was no one else hurt or involved in the incident and they are not pursuing the matter further.

The boy's death is now before the coroner.
