Karen denies rowdy party

A Tauranga politician is denying a teenage party at her house got out of hand before a vehicle being driven by a 16 year old crashed into a property down the road from her house.
Karen Summerhays, Environment Bay of Plenty councillor and former Green Party candidate for Tauranga, says the party last week at her home on Waikite Road in Welcome Bay celebrated her daughter's 17th birthday.

The car driven by a 16 year old that rolled down a bank and into a backyard on Waikite Road.

Police say a 16 year old youth crashed a Mitsubishi Legnum into a property on Waikite Road the same night the party was being held at Karen's home.
Police say the Mitsubishi Legnum wagon lost control on Waikite Road, crashed about seven metres down a bank, rolled over a retaining wall and landed on its roof in the backyard of the property which backs onto Waikite Road. No one was injured in the incident.
A SunLive reporter at the scene when the car was being lifted out of the property the next morning saw a box of Maverick bourbon RTDs in the front passenger seat.
Senior sergeant Ian Campion says police were called to the party that night because it was getting out of hand but is unsure whether the person driving the Mitsubishi Legnum attended the party.
Karen says the party never got out of control and she chose to close it down.
'They all left really nicely. When the police arrived, they said the party was really well managed and everyone was well behaved,” says Karen.
She believes alcohol was being consumed at the party but says she never supplied any of the teenagers with alcohol.
'I have two daughters and they are allowed to celebrate their 16th and 17th birthdays. I would have turned 150 kids away at the gate, there was no problem,” says Karen.
She says the person driving the Mitsubishi Legnum could have been one of those she turned away at the gate and has been concerned about the bend on Waikite Road where the vehicle crashed.
