Man stable after lathe accident

A 51-year-old man is in a stable condition after suffering injuries to his face in a workplace accident in Greerton today.

The man was working in the industrial area of Maleme Street when his clothing became caught in a lathe, which kept dragging him in.

Emergency services were called to the Greerton workplace around 8am.

A 51-year-old man was flown to Waikato from Tauranga Hospital by the BayTrust Rescue helicopter.

A St John spokesperson says the man suffered serious facial injuries in an industrial lathe accident and was taken to Tauranga Hospital.

Duty pilot Art Kowalski says the man was in the Intensive Care Unit in Tauranga Hospital before he was flown to Waikato Hospital by the BayTrust Rescue helicopter.

'Apparently he went to reach a round the back of the lave for whatever reason and the vest got caught into the lathe and it just kept bringing him forward until it did injuries to his face.”

Waikato District Health Board media and communications director Mary-Anne Gill says the man is in a stable condition.
