El Niño is expected to cause spikes in high temperatures this summer which, combined with dryness and wind, will result in an increased wildfire risk.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand is calling on everyone to have a grab bag – and an escape plan in case of a large wildfire.
Fire and Emergency national manager for community readiness and recovery Tom Ronaldson said while a grab bag and an emergency plan should always be in place, it is particularly pertinent in the next few months.
“Our message to communities at this stage is start your preparations now and don’t get caught out.”
Ronaldson said the greatest risk of wildfire was in the eastern area of both the North Island and the South Island, as well as central parts of the North Island and the most northern parts of it – but that didn’t mean all areas won’t have risk.
It was also important that people look at ways to prevent fires.

“In New Zealand, we see around 98% of our fires caused by human activity,” he said.
“We want people to be diligent and looking at how they can prevent an event from occurring.”
That included being aware of conditions in their area – and taking extra steps once they see the grass turning brown and drier conditions beginning.
Not parking a vehicle in long grass which could inadvertently start a fire was another example, Ronaldson said.
He encouraged people to look at the checkitsalright.co.nz website before doing burn-offs – and raking the remains off and wetting them to guarantee a fire wouldn’t reignite later.
For smaller communities with only one road in and out, Ronaldson said making a plan was even more important, given how quickly fires could move in such conditions.
“Ultimately, it’s about communities coming together, having a conversation and making a really, really clear plan for this upcoming season.”
Ronaldson suggested people should have sturdy shoes, warm clothing, food, water, a radio, torch and gloves in a grab bag.
Necessities for young children and pets should also be included.
