A critical flood protection asset at Waihī Beach has been tampered with, prompting a warning from the Western Bay of Plenty District Council after a gate at Maranui Pond was discovered wired open

In a post on Facebook, the council said the pond played a critical role in reducing downstream flooding during heavy rainfall by temporarily retaining water and controlling its release.

A recent inspection found the gate had been altered, affecting the pond’s ability to function as designed.

Council staff said modifying flood management infrastructure could have serious consequences for the wider community, particularly during significant rain events.

Maranui Pond was specifically designed to slow the flow of stormwater during periods of heavy rainfall, helping reduce the risk of flooding further downstream.

The council asked residents not to tamper with flood protection assets and to report any issues or suspicious activity involving stormwater infrastructure.

Anyone who notices damage or concerns can contact the council on 0800 926 732 or email [email protected]
