More time has been allowed for public submissions to the Government Inquiry into the Tauranga landslides that claimed lives at Mauao and in Pāpāmoa earlier this year.

The inquiry has extended its public submissions process by three weeks until 5pm on September 4.

The submission process allows people to share information, experiences and perspectives on the January 22 landslides at Mauao and Welcome Bay Rd, Pāpāmoa.

Inquiry chairman Sir Mark O’Regan said a high calibre of submissions had been received already, and further contributions from the public were welcome.

“We have received thoughtful and informative submissions from people with a wide range of knowledge, experience and perspectives.”

He said submissions had been valuable in helping the inquiry build a “fuller picture” of the circumstances surrounding the “tragic” events and in identifying the lessons that could be learned from them.

“Extending the submissions period will allow more people to share information that may assist the inquiry’s work.”

The inquiry is seeking information about how the landslides occurred, whether agencies took appropriate steps to manage risks before the events, including any warnings or evacuations, and what lessons can be learned from the incidents.

People can make submissions through the inquiry’s online portal and may provide photographs, video footage and other relevant material not already supplied to police or other investigating agencies.
