The findings of an independent review into the fatal landslide at Mount Maunganui Beachside Holiday Park will be publicly released by August 21.

The review was commissioned by Tauranga Mayor Mahé Drysdale and councillors in February following the January 22, 2026 landslide tragedy and is being led by retired High Court Judge Paul Davison, KSO KC.

Under the review’s terms of reference, Davison has examined the circumstances leading up to the landslide, including the decision-making processes and systems in place at the time, Tauranga City Council said in a media release.

The review will also identify lessons that can be learned and recommend improvements to strengthen future safety practices.

The review is due to be completed on July 31 and will then be provided to the mayor and councillors for consideration.

Mayor Mahé Drysdale said council wanted to ensure those most directly affected by the tragedy were informed of the findings before they were made public.

“Before releasing the findings publicly, it is important that we meet with and support those most directly affected,” Drysdale said.

“Given the significance of the review and the loss experienced, we want to ensure that those most impacted are informed of the findings ahead of the public release.”

Drysdale acknowledged there was significant public interest in the event and said council would take time to carefully consider the report’s findings and engage with affected parties before releasing it.

The council-commissioned review is separate from other investigations currently underway, including a Government Inquiry and investigations being carried out by the coroner, police and WorkSafe.

Tauranga City Council said it would not be providing any further comment at this stage.

The landslide at Mount Maunganui Beachside Holiday Park on January 22 sparked widespread concern and prompted calls for a thorough examination of the circumstances surrounding the incident and the management of risks in the area.

The review findings are expected to be released publicly no later than August 21.
