A long-standing Mount Maunganui art collective is inviting the public to experience its latest exhibition, relocated this year following disruption at Mauao.

The Mount Art Group, established in 1974, has grown from 21 members meeting in a tutor’s garage to a thriving collective of 40 artists. Now in its 52nd year, the group continues to meet weekly at St Peter’s Church Hall on Victoria St, where members gather every Thursday morning to create and share their work.

Known for its supportive and encouraging culture, the group places a strong emphasis on fostering creativity and appreciation among its members, many of whom have developed their artistic skills within the collective environment.

The group is best known publicly for its annual exhibition, traditionally held at the Mount Surf Club. However, due to the recent disaster at Mauao, organisers have been forced to shift both the date and venue for this year’s event.

The exhibition will now be held at Mount Maunganui College over the Matariki weekend, providing a fresh opportunity for the community to engage with local art.

Mount Maunganui College students will also be exhibiting their artwork.

Art lovers are encouraged to attend, view the diverse works on display and support local artists by taking home a piece of Mount Maunganui’s creative spirit.
