A Bay of Plenty serviceman who began his Royal New Zealand Air Force career setting up communications networks on the ground is preparing to take to the skies in a new role aboard one of New Zealand’s most advanced military aircraft.
Corporal Jordan Moeke, 27, is retraining as an air warfare specialist with the RNZAF’s No 5 Squadron, moving from his role as a communication and information systems (CIS) technician to operating the sophisticated sensor systems aboard the Boeing P-8A Poseidon surveillance aircraft.
Originally from Whakatāne, Moeke joined No 35 Squadron Air Training Corps at the age of 13 and says the experience laid the foundation for his military career.
He learned skills including first aid, navigation, radio procedures and discipline, which he says have remained valuable throughout his service.
After enlisting in the RNZAF, he joined No 5 Squadron as a CIS technician, helping establish and maintain the IT, satellite and radio networks required to support operations.
Moeke deployed twice to Japan on Operation Whio, the New Zealand Defence Force mission supporting international efforts to monitor United Nations sanctions against North Korea.
During a 2024 deployment, he led a team responsible for maintaining critical communications links between the P-8A Poseidon and headquarters.
His responsibilities included managing secure communications systems, protecting networks from cyber threats and supporting aircraft tracking and mission data management.

In 2025, he returned to Japan as an operations officer, helping co-ordinate mission objectives and working alongside partner nations. He described the deployment as a dynamic environment involving close international co-operation.
Now, Moeke is preparing for a new chapter as an air warfare specialist, where he will operate the Poseidon’s radar, electro-optic, electronic warfare and acoustic warfare systems while airborne.
He said the RNZAF had provided opportunities for career development, overseas travel and lifelong friendships.
Moeke is expected to graduate as an air warfare specialist this year and will continue serving with No 5 Squadron at RNZAF Base Ōhakea.
