Drivers are being urged to plan ahead as a “super weekend” of roadworks promises major closures and delays across key Tauranga routes.
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi says intensive construction work on the State Highway 29 Takitimu Drive Toll Rd and SH2 Takitimu Drive is needed to progress the Takitimu North Link project, with temporary closures required where the two highways merge.
The works, running from 8pm on Friday, June 12, to 4am on Monday, June 15, will involve road widening, pavement construction, barrier installation and layout changes at the busy interchange.
Motorists can expect delays, particularly around Tauriko on SH29 and SH2 near 15th Ave, and are advised to allow extra time, slow down and follow all traffic management in place.
A full weekend closure will be in place on SH29 Toll Road northbound, between SH29/SH36 at Tauriko and SH2 at 15th and 11th Aves. Traffic will be detoured via SH29A.

Meanwhile, night-time closures will affect SH2 Takitimu Drive northbound, between SH29 and 11th Ave, from 8pm to 6am on Friday, 7pm to 6am on Saturday, and 7pm to 4am on Sunday. Vehicles will be redirected via Cameron Rd and Elizabeth St.
Southbound and westbound routes will remain open during the works, including SH2 access to Fifteenth Ave.
The closures are part of the ongoing Takitimu North Link Stage 1 project – a Crown-funded 6.8km, four-lane expressway between Tauranga and Te Puna.
