New Zealanders can expect to receive a test of the national emergency mobile alert (EMA) system this month.

In a social media post, NZ Civil Defence said the annual test would be sent to all capable phones and other SIM-connected devices on Sunday, June 14, between 6pm and 7pm.

The exercise is designed to ensure the system functions correctly nationwide and can be relied on during genuine emergencies.

Civil Defence said the alerts were a key public safety tool, warning people about serious hazards such as earthquakes, tsunamis or severe weather.

The agency advised people who may be affected by the alert tone – including those with hidden phones for personal safety – to take precautions during the test window.

“Turn off any devices with a SIM connection between 6pm and 7pm, or put them into flight mode,” Civil Defence said.

People could also mute the alert sound by pressing the volume button on their phone, while still leaving the message visible on screen.

More than 150,000 children and others across New Zealand rely on emergency responses each year, making regular testing of the system an important part of national preparedness.
