As summer heats up across the Bay of Plenty, harbourmaster staff are urging boaties and paddlers to brush up on the rules, after more than 100 safety breaches were recorded just weeks into the season.
Since Labour Weekend, 115 infringements have been issued – with speeding jet skiers and lifejacket non‑compliance emerging as the biggest concerns, harbourmaster Jon Jon Peters said.
“Speeding jet skiers account for 27% of these infringements, and we’re also seeing a range of issues from powerboaters and paddle craft users,” Peters said.
Of these infringements, 26 were for not having enough lifejackets or personal flotation devices (PFDs), with 14 of those involving paddle craft users.
Peters said paddleboarders and kayakers were particularly unaware that wearing a lifejacket or PFD is not optional – it’s compulsory.
“It’s estimated that more than two-thirds of drowning fatalities in New Zealand could have been prevented if lifejackets were worn.
“Whether you’re fishing, boating or paddling, make sure you talk to your local lifejacket supplier or our harbourmaster team about the best type of lifejacket or PFD for your activity.”
Top tips for choosing and fitting the right lifejacket or PFD include checking the weight rating and ensuring it’s suitable for you; checking the fit by lifting your arms above your head and gently lifting the jacket’s shoulders (if it rises above your chin, it’s too large); and getting inflatable lifejackets serviced regularly.
“Education ends at the boat ramp,” Peters said.
“It’s up to those using lakes, rivers or harbours this summer to learn and know the rules before they set off.”
The Bay of Plenty Regional Council’s Boating in the Bay booklet has all the rules and advice you need to stay safe on the water.
You can pick up a copy from patrol boats operating across the region, including the Rotorua Te Arawa Lakes, throughout the busy summer period.
It’s also available online at the council website, or from safer boating ambassadors visiting boat ramps until mid-February.
