The Armed Offenders Squad have been called to a property on Park Road in Katikati after explosions were heard coming from the building.

Callers to SunLive reported a total of 12 explosions were heard coming from the old KingKat factory on Park Road just after midday today.

One of the callers says they saw thick smoke coming from the building shortly after the explosions were heard.

'It was just big black smoke.”

Another caller says the building is suspected to have been a P lab.

'It's more than just a fire.”

A witness who was at the scene says about 10 police cars were at the scene half an hour before the explosions were heard.

She says a helicopter was also hovering overhead before any explosions took place.

Police, Fire and ambulance are at the scene.

A family of 12 were evacuated from their home on Park Road around 11am. Other Park Road residents have not been able to enter the street for about two hours.

Police are not allowing people access to the street due to safety measures.

A reporter at the scene says white tents, believed to be decontamination tents, have been erected at the scene.

The road block has now been lifted and traffic is now flowing.
