Tauranga Racecourse will revive a cherished tradition on Monday, hosting the Anniversary Day Northern Race Meeting for the first time in four years.
The 10-race programme promises an exhilarating afternoon of thoroughbred horse racing, live music, and free family entertainment to cap off the long weekend.
Racing enthusiasts will enjoy free gate admission, with gates opening at 11am and the first race, The Gartshore Maiden 1600, set to jump at 12.18pm.
Local trainer Cliff Goss is banking on his three-year-old chestnut gelding, Happy Venture, ridden by leading jockey Craig Grylls, to take the opening race.
Meanwhile, Jim Pender’s nine-year-old El Bandolero will represent Tauranga in the Ultimate Mazda 2100.
The return of this historic meeting, which was last hosted by Te Teko before its closure in 2020, has racing fans excited.
A Punters Club will assist newcomers in placing their bets, while Circus in a Flash will keep children entertained.
With live music, family fun, and thrilling races throughout the day, Tauranga promises an unforgettable Anniversary Day experience for all.

What a fantastic day out

I attended this meeting with a friend who was new to horse racing. I explained to her to set an amount she could afford to lose, and be prepared to lose it. I explained the information in the race book regarding form and pundits and she lapped it up. We placed our bets and enjoyed the sunshine. The atmosphere was idyllic, with families picnicing on the grass and kids dancing to the free music. It was a really enjoyable day and, if they decide to tear down Geerton Racecourse, it will be a tragedy. At the end of the day we went and had our tickets scanned then matched the winnings against our budgets. My friend lost $5 and I lost $20. Neither of us were upset; this included food, beverages, and race books and we agreed it was a great day out. Good value for money.
