Police say if you’re walking on Mauao / Mount Maunganui this coming week, see if you can spot the 78 rescue markers placed along the tracks.

You can see the markers on signs and other man-made structures.

"They’re GPS marked so that if anyone gets into difficulty, Police Search and Rescue, LandSAR, FENZ and Surf Lifesaving NZ can quickly identify the location of people requiring assistance," says a police spokesperson.

"If you need emergency assistance on Mauao, call 111 and tell the call-taker the number on the rescue marker nearest to you.

"They’ll pass that information on to the Police Search and Rescue coordinator, who can quickly get help to you."

This week get outdoors and enjoy the tracks around Mauao – and see if you can spot all 78 of the markers.
