Price of cigarettes set to increase

Bay of Plenty smokers are set to have a chunk of their money taken as the price for a packet of cigarettes is set to rise.

Parliament voted unanimously in favour of the increase during the third reading of legislation enabling excise increases outlined in the Government's budget in May.

It means tax rates on tobacco products will rise by 10 per cent every year for the next four years.

By 2016, a standard pack of smokes will cost more than $20.

Associate Health Minister Tariana Turia says the price increases will provide an incentive for smokers to 'kick the habit”.

She says price increases are effective, immediate and known to work.

Then double the prive every year and $13/packet now will be $104 in 4 years, think of how many lives would be saved by that!

Get the baseball bats ready folks

Watch this space for a new increase in dairy and service station robberies. Get your baseball bats at the ready all you dairy owners - your government is putting your lives in danger again - but its OK - they are saving some other people from themselves, so your suffering is acceptable.

Look at them, fat obese politicos curbing personal freedom on health grounds! Lard a$$es prohibiting smoking via price while we have to pay the associated cost of healthcare for these fatsos! The intolerable intrusion on personal freedom and personal liberty by messianic sociopathic politicians is casting a dark shadow on this formerly free and tolerant country. This shadow will impact our society in many ways, not only in forms that Tomahawk Kid mentioned. NB: I'm a non-smoker.

The price of alcohol remains the same.....correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't alcohol kill just as many people? The only thing this is going to do is cause more crime....but the so called smart people sitting in the big seats don't think that far, not when it means more taxes for their pockets
