Hundreds of plane enthusiasts are enjoying the Classic Flyers Aero Open Day at Mount Maunganui today.

The event, which started at 10am, runs until 2.30pm at Classic Flyers in Jean Batten Drive.

The RNZAF Black Falcons team are enjoying the local hospitality and are excited for the display planned for this afternoon.

The Black Falcons have a display coming up at 1.15pm at Tauranga Airport, and will also be doing a flypast over the T20 Black Clash match at Bay Oval at 6.20pm.

The five planes have been seen circling over Mount Maunganui and Papamoa this morning, delighting local residents with their formation and flypasts.

Unfortunately due to the weather in Tauranga on Friday evening, the organisers had to make the tough decision to cancel the RNZAF Black Falcons display planned over Mount Main Beach.

There's still time to head along to Classic Flyers. Bring the kids for formation displays, joy rides, car clubs displays, hot dogs and more. Under fives are free, adults $20, children $10, and family $60 for two adults and up to three children. Gate Sales are available (Eftpos & Cash) with loads of free parking.

No Beechcraft at the beach?

A pity about the weather meaning no display over Mount Main Beach, but it was still good to hear the distinctive Beechcraft engines over the city, and see the formation's discipline and accuracy. An interesting fact (at least to me...) that I learned yesterday was that these aircraft are equipped with ejector seats. Usually associated with jet aircraft but these are full military.
