Highway open after serious crash

Update, 9.39pm: State Highway 2 is now open.

The highway, between Pongakawa and Otamarakau, was closed earlier due to a serious crash.

Up to three cars were reported to be involved in the crash.

Police are investigating the cause.

Update, 5.50pm: State Highway 2 is closed between Pongakawa and Otamarakau due to a serious crash.

The crash involves up to three vehicles and occurred between Wharere Road and Benner Road.

Police say, at least one person is believed to have received serious injuries.

NZTA Waka Kotahi advise that a detour is in place.

Westbound vehicles can detour left onto Benner Rd, right onto Old Coach Rd, right onto Pongakawa Station Rd, then left to continue on SH2.

The same route applies in reverse for eastbound vehicles.

Motorists are advised to expect delays.

The road is closed until further notice.

Earlier, 4.39pm: Emergency services are at the scene of a serious crash that has blocked State Highway 2, Te Puke East Road, in Western Bay of Plenty.

Police were alerted about 4.20pm.

The crash involves up to three vehicles and occurred between Wharere Road and Benner Road.

Police say, at least one person is believed to have received serious injuries.

A SunLive reader who says the crash would have happened behind him as he travelled north says that there were at least six police cars and four ambulances that passed going to the scene.

"Motorists in the area should expect delays."
