Cameron Road: Resurfacing and closures

The Eleventh Avenue intersection east is expected to be fully closed from today, Monday, November 6, for three weeks, weather dependent.

Work is now underway on the streetscape and stormwater upgrades on the eastern side of the Eleventh Avenue intersection.

This was planned to be a full closure but is now occurring with left lane closures around the north-east - Jay Car,  and the south-east - The Flooring Room - corners from Cameron Road and into Eleventh Avenue east.

Signage showing diversions will be in place.

Tauranga City Council says their team has been working throughout this last weekend to switch from using the old traffic signals to the new ones at the Elizabeth Street/ Cameron Road intersection.

“We thank you for your patience and understanding while these essential upgrades are underway,” says a council spokesperson.

Resurfacing

“The team is in the process of resurfacing Cameron Road at present.

“Because resurfacing cannot be carried out in wet weather, the team is planning to prepare the road surface approximately two weeks ahead of scheduled asphalting.”

This work involves milling the road - scraping off a layer of the road surface - in several sections in advance, so the team can move through faster when asphalting the final layer. Some sections of road will appear partially-complete for longer than usual.

Resurfacing is usually carried out at nights from 6pm to 6am, although there will be some day works as well. Most of this work will involve alternating lane closures, although there will be diversions in place when the team resurfaces the major intersections.

Resurfacing works currently underway:

  • Fourth Avenue to Sixth Avenue (east and west)
  • Eleventh Avenue to Ninth Avenue (west)
  • Thirteenth Avenue to Eleventh Avenue (west)
  • Sixth Avenue to Third Avenue (west)
  • 17th Avenue to Fifteenth Avenue (west)

Upcoming resurfacing (dates and diversions to be confirmed)

  • The team is planning to resurface the Fifteenth Avenue intersection and the Elizabeth Street intersection from 6pm Sunday, November 12, for five nights (weather dependent).
