Lifeguards reporting a busy Labour Weekend in the Bay of Plenty.

Surf Life-Saving New Zealand's eastern region lifesaving manager Chaz Gibbons-Campbell says while the weekend was busy, people showed good behaviour while out on the beach.

“We had no rescues this weekend, just a couple of major first-aid cases. The main one was on Saturday in Papamoa, where a young girl dislocated her shoulder while swimming, our team got her out of the water, treated and then gave her to St John for further treatment.“

“It was really busy, lots of people came, but it was great to see all of them enjoying the beach responsibly, swimming between the flags, following all the instructions, and all the surfers attending all the guidelines. Is great to see how people respond to lifeguards.”

According to Chaz, the patrols will continue during the weekends at Mount Maunganui, Omanu and Papamoa Beach from 11am to 4pm every weekend from now till Thursday, December 14.

“We will increase the patrols on weekdays to ensure all the beachgoers can come, enjoy the summer holidays and go back to their houses safely.”

“We are constantly working with NZ Police, St John, the regional council and the Harbour Master in Mount Maunganui, to be sure New Zealanders and visitors can make the most of this summer.”
