Blind Low Vision NZ is excited to announce the launch of Pawgust, a fitness and fundraising challenge that encourages participants and their furry friends to brave the cold and walk or run during the month of August to raise vital funds for Blind Low Vision NZ Guide Dogs.

In an unprecedented collaboration, Blind Low Vision NZ is partnering with Guide Dogs Australia to bring Pawgust to New Zealand Aotearoa for the first time, making this event a truly international celebration of compassion and canine companionship. Join today at  www.pawgust.com.au

At the heart of Pawgust is the remarkable story of Claudia, a 22-year-old with an infectious positivity and a determination that knows no bounds.

Claudia's journey with low vision began as a baby when her right eye was removed, at only 8 weeks old, due to a rare cancer, leaving her left eye with peripheral vision due to significant scar tissue and treatments. Despite these challenges, Claudia's spirit remains undaunted, and she embraces every opportunity for growth and adventure.

Recently graduating with a Bachelor of Health Science, majoring in Health Management, Claudia now works full-time in HR in the public health sector.

A job that keeps her very busy – she now plays a key part in bringing doctors into New Zealand and certifying their training. Claudia finds huge satisfaction in working in the health sector given it is such a huge part of her own life.

In her spare time, Claudia indulges her loves for horse riding, going to the gym and catching up with friends. Claudia joked that it might be a bit dangerous at times, riding her horse with low vision, but she loves it.

Nearly three years ago, Claudia's life took a transformative turn when she was matched with her guide dog, Aztec, a devoted Black Labrador. As a natural animal lover, it was easy to form a relationship. Aztec is always by Claudia’s side, and they make the perfect duo.

“Aztec has completely changed everything,” she says, “It’s a completely different independence that I could not possibly have expected”.

Aztec gets Claudia from A to B safely, and she doesn’t need to rely on everyone to help her get around anymore. “She has opened up my world. From making the simple things possible like walking to the local supermarket, through to much more challenging rush hour commutes to and from the office.”

Claudia couldn’t imagine life without Aztec in it now. She is thankful to Blind Low Vision NZ for helping her live independently and confidently.

As Pawgust takes off in New Zealand, Blind Low Vision NZ encourage everyone to gather their four-legged friends and join the movement to make a difference.

By participating in Pawgust, New Zealanders will experience the joy of walking or running with their canine companions while supporting Kiwis who are blind or have low vision, transforming their lives, just like Claudia’s.

Every year, Blind Low Vision NZ breeds approximately 120 potential guide dogs, with approximately 40 of them successfully graduating to serve as guide dogs.

However, there is a significant waiting list of up to 33 New Zealanders eagerly awaiting the support of a guide dog to help them lead independent lives.

The current waiting time to receive a guide dog is around two years. The anticipated increased demand over the coming years will extend the waiting time unless more dogs can be successfully trained as guide dogs.
