Fans across Tauranga are paying tribute to the late music icon Tina Turner, who passed away today aged 83.

One SunLive reader says he worked on the setup for the final concert of her world tour, located in Christchurch in the late 90s, where Turner put on a special show for the concert crew after a challenging setup process.

'There had been a lot of rain and due to the structural weakness of a new triangular scaffolding they were trailing the entire stage collapsed in the early hours of the morning when all the light gear went up.

'Luckily everyone was on a break so nobody was hurt but it was a very close call. Anyway everybody came back and disassembled the stage and rebuilt a new one flown over from Australia, and the show went on at 6pm that evening.

'Tina was absolutely amazing and gracious, she ended up playing the set seated with an acoustic and playing her new and personal songs. She even put on a doo afterwards for the crew who had just worked over 48 hours straight to make [the concert] happen.

'My job was to feed the crew and it was one of the longest shifts I've ever done, but somehow she made us all feel appreciated. Such a courageous woman, so gifted, humble and charming.

'She will be remembered with fondness by the many who met with her and enjoyed her life.”

Another SunLive reader says she went to a Tina Turner concert 'many years ago” in Palmerston North.

'She was so amazing! She knew how to move those legs! An amazing performer.”

On the SunLive Facebook page, another user says they watched Turner perform in Auckland. She says it was a 'bloody good concert”.

'She was quite tiny, had to move right up front to see her or watch the screens.”

Another reader says Turner's performing with Mick Jagger was 'phenomenal”.

'She will always be ‘simply the best'”.

Another reader says they have seen the Warriors light up Mt Smart Stadium on occasions, but there was nothing like Tina Turner on "that balmy Auckland Saturday night, on April 12, 1997".

"We were in shorts and T-shirts and on the grassy embankment. We drank wine, the air was thick with dope and 'The Queen' belted her distinctive unforgettable brand of high energy rock and roll for a couple of hours – loud and raunchy. As a 50-year-old non-dancer at the time, I was even moved to get up and do a few moves.

"She was inexhaustible, extraordinary athleticism for a women of 60 then . And I just remember the extraordinary mood as a crowd of 20, 30, 40 thousand people left the stadium with smiles and earworms. We don't need another hero."

And I'm sorry she has gone. The music remains and that's what was important to her.
