Tauranga vape shop broken into twice in two months

A locally owned Tauranga vape store is being repeatedly targeted for burglaries – and managers believe an underage vaping 'crisis” is to blame.

Jordan Pulley is the wholesale manager of the vape shop, located on Maungaui Road.

She says the store was broken into overnight, before they even had the chance to fix the damages from the last time it had happened.

According to Jordan, youths first broke into the shop by using an "electric hacksaw" on the door at about 2am.

She says CCTV footage has been sent to police.

"We firmly believe that these break-ins are a result of the concerning youth vaping epidemic."

"EasyPuff takes every possible step to deter underage vaping, including refusing sales to minors and those buying on their behalf.

"It's disheartening to see that these break-ins may be the youth's way of evading our preventative measures."

EasyPuff managing director Robert Reid says "about $2000 to $3000" worth of items were stolen.

He says his shop is designed to help people quit smoking, but the youth vaping problem is causing those who are too young to become addicted and commit crimes.

'We all have kids, and don't want them to be exposed to these kinds of products. That's why we have frosted windows, to prevent kids passing by from looking in. We believe this is the responsible approach to take.”

Robert says he often denies kids who come in with obvious fake IDs, and believes parents and older siblings of youths wanting vapes come in to buy vapes for them.

This along with 'easily accessible” disposable vapes is why he believes more youth are getting their hands on them.Police say they were advised at 2.50am there had been an alarm activation at the vape store. Photo: Supplied.

'When you've got a school confiscating a bucket load of vapes every month asking where students are getting them from, a lot of parents blame the shops and don't take any responsibility.”

Jordan says EasyPuff takes "every possible step" to deter underage vaping, including refusing sales to minors and those buying on their behalf.

"It's disheartening to see that these break-ins may be the youth's way of evading our preventative measures."

"We stand fully committed to ending the youth vaping crisis," they affirmed. In addition to educating our customers about the risks and consequences of underage vaping, we will continue to support any efforts that aim to curb this harmful trend."

Police say they were advised at 2.50am there had been an alarm activation at the vape store at 1.45am on Tuesday, May 23.

'Enquiries are on the way to identify and locate the offender,” says a police spokesperson.

Information can also be provided anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.

Enquiries on the earlier ram-raid at the same location on March 28/29 are ongoing. The file number for the first burglary is 230329/0515.

Stop selling the hideous, harmful 'products' and get a real job. Legalised drug pushers is what you are in effect.

Underage vaping is not the problem.

Underage vaping is not the problem - the problem is the softly-softly approach taken in NZ towards crime. Crime has escalated beyond belief since the Labour party came to power. It's about time crime in this country was tackled head on!! Start punishing scumbags by dishing out lengthy custodial sentences. Make detention centers/prisons less comfortable (no TV's, no visitors, no smokes etc..) just the basics to keep inmates alive - water, bread and rice. The approach this country takes (and a one do-gooders agree with) is clearly not working, so something new needs to be tried - start getting tough on crime. The message will eventually get through - look at Singapore and some of the middle East countries for some lessons!!

I endorse comments from 'fair game' and Bruja.

This is a foreign owned industry that should never have been allowed to start here. (A number of us expressed our concerns at the time, but were ignored.) There is not, and never has been, ANY scientifically objective study that shows vaping can help stop smoking. The ONLY thing that stops people smoking is changing their mind about wanting to. (I speak from experience as a "40 a day" smoker, 40 years ago.) I am sorry about Jordan's business and do not condone the illegal breakins, but this is a stupid, pointless, industry that simply grows rich on the weakness of its victims.

remove the sales

should not be allowed to sell them in nz get rid of the crap alltogether, the people who sell it are making a fortune out of other peoples weakness, they are as bad as the drug pushers.

The right to engage in legitimate business

Wow...the haters here... if you cannot operate a legitimate business without folk flogging your goods you are in a society that is sliding backwards. It doesnt matter what your opinion of vaping is , it is irrelevant . Bottom line is someone trying to earn an honest dollar is being subjected to further trauma via those stupid comments. Unlike others you have my sympathy . You have every right to expect to be able to run a legitimate business and should be granted the same protections as any other legitimate business.

Don't Ban Vaping

Posted on 25-05-2023 06:29 | By Thats Nice

Vaping was introduced to help cigarette smokers stop smoking and it works. Why would you want to ban something that works? Ban it and people will go back to cigarettes - end of, and we know (do your research) that cigarette smoking contains far more chemicals. Should we ban doughnuts and lollies because they too are dangerous if eaten constantly?

hmmm

Please post a link supporting your assertion that "it works", with a scientifically conducted study that was not financed by the Vaping industry. I know a number of people who used to smoke. Now they vape. They swapped one addiction for another and neither of these addictions has any health benefit. The ONLY way to stop these addictions is to change your mind about them. It's not easy but it can be done. Vaping and smoking are costing us millions every year and even the exorbitant tax on them doesn't cover it. Meanwhile, overseas oligarchs get rich off our misery.

Objecting to something that is objectionable does not make anyone a "hater". I agree with your support for "legitimate business" and I already expressed (sincere) sympathy for Jordan. Breaking the Law has to be unacceptable. The problem here is that Vaping should NOT be a "legitimate business", any more than supplying meth and P should be. Of course people have a right to make a living, and I support people running their own business. (I ran my own company for over 40 years). But you do have a responsibility to consider the nature of a business before you undertake it. Powerful interests lobbied our government to get Vaping introduced and they accepted it.
