Historic photo recreated for 40th anniversary

The Breeze Tauranga breakfast show hosts Jolene James and Max Baird have recreated the orginal photo of Charles and Di arrving at Baycourt in 1983, taken by Nigel Watts.

Over at The Breeze Tauranga, a good dose of crazy and kiwi ingenuity has come to the fore once again, delighting listeners of the station's breakfast show.

In the lead up to Baycourt's 40th anniversary, Jolene James from The Breeze Tauranga breakfast show remembered seeing an iconic photo of Prince Charles, Princess Diana and a policeman at the official opening in 1983.

After trawling online archives she found the photo which was taken by Nigel Watts and had what she says is a 'crazy” idea that she and fellow show host, Max Baird, could recreate it.

"Obviously I immediately thought it was my opportunity to be a royal and play Diana. What woman wouldn't want to do that?" says Jolene.

From looking at the original photo there were two possible options for Max: the policeman or Charles. As Max was on holiday at the time, The Breeze put it out to public vote and listeners decided emphatically he should be the policeman.

The next step was to try and replicate their outfits.

After Jolene and Max asked for help from their listeners, friend of the show Catherine offered a cream 80s dress that would fit the bill for Diana.

An exhaustive search for a similar hat to Diana proved fruitless, until Catherine decided to put her millinery skills to use, creating a replica out of a plastic plate, bubble wrap, a pillow case and a place mat.

Diana also had a pink clutch purse on the day and Catherine fashioned that out of pink tissue paper.

After finalising the Diana outfit, Jolene and Max needed to sort the Policeman.

He's a prominent figure in the original picture wearing a white helmet. Not hopeful of tracking one down, they were blown away when another listener, Julie, got in touch saying she had a helmet. It had belonged to her husband and father-in-law who had both served in the police.

Finding the matching 1983 police jacket and trousers wasn't as easy, but the wardrobe team at Tauranga Musical Theatre found a jacket and shirt for Max to wear instead.

Come photo replica day, Jolene realised she'd forgotten to pick a bunch of flowers from her garden as Diana's posy so improvised with an artificial plant from the office.

Thanks to modern technology, The Breeze Tauranga breakfast team - Jolene as Diana and Max as the Policeman - were superimposed onto the original photo creating an illusion of time travel.

"We're stoked at how well it's come out," says Max.

"If I close my eyes I can almost imagine we were there,” says Jolene.
