Jandals. They're loved by Kiwis – but social media star Jordan Watson thinks the country should have more in the record books to prove it.
Peeking into the Guinness World Records, the ‘How To Dad' comedian was surprised to learn the fastest sprint while wearing jandals was a title held by a 'German dude”.
Feeling patriotic, he headed down to Wharepai Domain and unofficially beat the record on video by 0.22 seconds after four attempts.
'There's only six jandal related world records in the world, and sadly, none of them are owned by Australian's and New Zealander's,” says Jordan.
To combat New Zealand's 'appalling” lack of jandal world records, he's kicked off his own ‘Golden World Records' – a campaign to set the best jandal records the world has ever seen.
It's a collaboration between himself and his brand, Golden, a jandal company aiming to maximise comfort and minimising breakages while tackling outdoor activities across the country.
'The records can be anything jandal related – longest time balancing a jandal on one finger, fastest five metre sprint in jandals, farthest jump wearing jandals, most jandal claps in five seconds - the options are endless, get creative.
'We're putting it out to Kiwis and Aussies to get involved. All you have to do is tag us on Instagram and you'll be sent a certificate and put on our Golden World Records website. Way easier than getting on an official world records page.”
On what Jordan would like to see from Tauranga, he says 'anything beach related” should do the trick.
'The world is your oyster. If someone can run up the mount, send it through. No one else is claimed it, so send it through and become the first person in the world to run up the mount in jandals.
'Even though we know people have run up the mount in jandals many times, you'll hold the world record, the golden record, that is.”
Jordan's favourite records which have been submitted so far include the first jandal powered kayak race, and the first person to wear jandals while unicycling and bouncing a ball with a tennis racket.
'We've also had a mum folding washing while balancing a pair of jandals on her head. She did a little time lapse of herself and the jandals didn't fall, which was a great record.”
People who wish to submit their own Golden record have roughly two weeks, according to Jordan.
