Students to wear odd shoes

Fairhaven School is encouraging members of the community to join them in some toe tapping fun on Friday and pop on a pair of mismatched shoes to support child cancer.

Odd Shoe Day is a national awareness campaign for non-profit volunteer organisation - Camp Quality.

On September 14, Camp Quality is seeking a gold coin donation from anyone prepared to wear odd shoes along with the students at Fairhaven School.

The organisation provides a range of support programmes across New Zealand each year for children aged five to 16-years-old living with cancer.

Fairhaven School's Assistant Principal, Kellie Jepsen, says the school choses one charity each year to promote and the idea of kids supporting other kids was a good idea.

'The kids are really getting into it - they are trying to get high heels and gumboots to wear.”

Fairhaven School is planning to draw a chalk outline of a large shoe on the concrete and fill it with gold coins donated by the children.

'(We plan) to make a big gold shoe.”

Camp Quality chairman Gary Troup says the idea is to make it a fun experience.

'We hope even those who chose to wear normal footwear will also support us with a donation.

'This is the first of what we hope will become a regular Odd Shoe Day fund raising campaign and we are most grateful for the wonderful support Camp Quality has received.”

More than 80 schools are expected to support the gold coin initiative including a large number of businesses.
