Radius Matua residents are taking on their own Everest Challenge.

For the second year running, the group of 80-year-olds and over will be walking up one of the steepest driveways in the rest home - all in the name of charity.

It's 200 metres long, and has about a 15 metre elevation, but the event was so popular last year residents are asking to do it again.

Radius Care events coordinator Klara Luxfordrulisek says the event first started a few years after some staff and family members began the Mount Maunganui Everest Challenge.

"Some of our residents said 'well we can't join you up the mount, but our driveway is pretty steep' so we decided to do a small scale version," says Clara.

"Last year we ended up with quite a sizable group of residents up the drive, some of them joined in their wheelchairs, some on their scooters, and some walked. They had a good sense of achievement, felt really good, and we raised some money."

When it came to this year, Klara was asked by many residents whether the challenge would return. She hopes to get "even a larger group" up the driveway this year.

"The residents love doing it. Some of them see it as a challenge, and some of them see it as an opportunity to support our crazy ideas and some great local charities."

Staff will be supporting residents on Friday, March 24 when they take up the challenge, and safety measures will be put in place to make sure no one is at risk.

Klara says last year, some residents decided to dress up and bring signs as a way to add to the fun.

"A group of people came as the 'supporting team' last year, and prepared their own signage on their electric scooters. One had a first aid sign, and one even had a stuffed 'search dog' accompanying them."

"I think we raised about $200 last year - it would be nice to beat it this time but we'll have to see!"
