It's time to get your family, friends or colleagues together, find your super suits and have a fun time at the 2023 Superhero Celebration Walk.

With all things superhero-themed, there'll be fun outfits, music, and Zumba as well as a free coffee or ice cream and prizes thanks to sponsors of the event.

"The celebration walk gives participants the opportunity to walk in remembrance of your hero - to honour, remember and celebrate their life," says an event organiser.

Head to Coronation Park, Mount Maunganui on Saturday, March 25.

The event opens at 9am and the walk begins at 10am.

After a short 45-minute course, there'll be spot, raffle, and best costume prizes up for grabs.

"One hundred per cent of funds raised from the day will directly help the ill and bereaved in our community who are supported by the wonderful superheroes at Waipuna Hospice."

This event concludes the Waipuna Hospice Superhero Challenge whereby Tauranga and WBOP residents joined forces in committing themselves to a time challenge related to key areas of work that Waipuna Hospice does in the community.

From walking to rowing, an impressive 691 hours have been logged and a total of $11,916 has been raised so far.

Funds raised from the Superhero Celebration Walk will go directly towards specialist palliative medical care and support services for patients and families in Tauranga and the Western Bay of Plenty living with a chronic, incurable disease.

The majority of people receiving support are cared for where they feel most comfortable - in their homes.

"Our goal is to help people make the most of their lives; to live every moment in whatever way is important to them. In addition to palliative nursing care and specialist palliative medical support, Waipuna Hospice provide respite care, practical support such as meal preparation, loan equipment, bereavement and grief support, chaplaincy service and spiritual support, counselling, child and adolescent support, social work, biography services, caregiver support, occupational therapy, education, books and resources, therapeutic massage," says a Waipuna Hospice spokesperson.

"Everything we provide is at no charge to patients and their families because we believe that hospice care should be available for everyone who needs it. Whilst provided at no cost to people using hospice services it costs a lot to provide.

"This financial year we need to raise $7.5 million to cover those costs. Grants, bequests, public appeals, events, merchandise and Waipuna Hospice charity shop revenue all help towards this enormous fundraising target."

Waipuna Hospice expects to care for about 900 patients this year and provide support services to them and their families.

"The majority of our patients are cared for under our Hospice at Home service. Our Inpatient Unit provides short-term admissions for pain management, symptom control, respite care and in some cases end of life care. Our Day Services clinics provide for newly referred and more active, independent patients.

"We offer support services to all patients and their families including equipment loan, counselling, social work, therapeutic and lymphedema massage, respite, healthcare assistance, caregiver education and a Day Programme to which our patients can come for companionship, a shared meal, entertainment or activities."

So, come along to celebrate the superhero in your life as well as all the work the Waipuna Hospice superheroes do to support families in our community facing difficult times.
