There's great food, music and vibes to be shared at the Tauranga Moana Pride Picnic this Saturday.

Running from 12pm to 4pm at Coronation Park, Mount Maunganui, event spokesperson Errol Poutoa says the picnic is open to 'all people who want to celebrate, embrace and accept our beautiful queer, LGBTQA+ community”.

'Pride picnic is an all-inclusive family friendly event. Starting several years ago, we wanted to create a safe space for our queer community and allies to come together and celebrate our uniqueness but also our similarities,” says Errol.

'We also know holding events like this makes Tauranga a better, more accepting and diverse city.”

Ahead of the event, the weather looks to be stellar. MetService is forecasting up to 25 degree weather on Saturday, making the pride picnic the perfect opportunity to celebrate and catch some sunshine.

At the event, attendees can expect a range of food from eight trucks, giveaways including McDonald's food vouchers, skittles rainbow lollies, local restaurant Rice Rice Baby vouchers, hairdresser Klova and Co voucher packs, and vouchers for mens clothing store Mane.

Auckland based drag performer and former Whakatāne local Miss Geena will also be performing for the first time at the Tauranga Moana Pride Picnic, and Errol says she is very 'excited”.

Miss Geena won't be the only one entertaining the crowd, as one of Aotearoa's top queer artists, Randa, is also making an appearance. Randa will be followed up by other Kiwi acts such as DJ Brutus Poers, and local Tauranga band I am Wheriko & Friends.

Steven Oates will also be hosting the WOOF Rainbow Dog Show at the event, so there will never be a dull moment!

According to Errol, pride started after the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York.

"Throughout the years many cities worldwide adopted the pride festival to show solidarity and recognise the impact of LGBTQIA+ people have in their community. It celebrates how far we have come as a community.

"In 2013, same-sex marriage equality became legal, and in 1986 the Homosexual Law Reform Act came in effect. It wasn't really that long ago it was illegal being 'us'. Pride picnic celebrates what we have achieved recognises the challenges we as a community still face in society."

The Tauranga Moana Pride Picnic is part of a weeklong set of events by Tauranga Moana Pride.

Of my hetrosexuality? Or is this just an exclusive event only for the virtuous who preach inclusiveness and tolerance?
