Child hit by car in Welcome Bay

A 10-year-old boy was taken to Tauranga Hospital after being hit by a car in Welcome Bay on Friday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Welcome Bay Road and James Cook Drive around 4pm after the child and vehicle collided.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says the victim was breathing and conscious when police and St John Ambulance staff responded to the incident.

He says the victim was complaining of back pain.

Witnesses at the scene say the boy ran out into front of the car. Police are still investigating the incident.

This incident is the fourth accident involving cars and pedestrians in four days.

An eight-year-old girl was clipped by a wing mirror of a car in Te Puke on Thursday and 20 minutes later a 53-year-old man was hit by a car while crossing Jellicoe Street.

On Tuesday a seven-year-old girl suffered minor injuries after being hit by a car outside Katikati Primary School.

Hope these people are ok but I seriously think pedestrians need to take more care.......Parents teach your children to look and take care.....

More crossings needed

The council need to wake up and realise the lil pedestrian bays are not enough - road like Welcome Bay Rd or any road where school kids cross everyday need to have pedestrian crossings where traffic MUST stop to allow pedestrians to cross. It's taken years and years of lobbying for both Welcome Bay school to get school crossings in place and Selwyn Ridge school to get pedestrian crossing on Victory St. Sadly it takes accidents like these (or worse a death) for action to be taken, council/LTSA need to be more pro-active in prevention of accidents like these.

where are the parents
