Daytime heating and some atmospheric instability may lead to some thunderstorms in the north-eastern corner of the North Island today says WeatherWatch.

The affected regions are expected to be mostly Bay of Plenty, East Cape, Gisborne and maybe Hawke's Bay.

"It's possible isolated showers and maybe isolated thunderstorms will pop up elsewhere," says a WeatherWatch spokesperson.

"Otherwise most of the country is dry."

MetService is forecasting northwesterlies in the Bay of Plenty on Sunday afternoon with possible showers.

"The lower South Island has a weak front arriving later today with a little bit of wet weather, mostly around parts of Fiordland, Southland and Otago."

WeatherWatch says weather will be dry and settled for most other places today.
