A shocked Labour Party caucus will leave Napier today, deliberating on who is best to lead them into the next election.
MPs had gathered to plan for the year ahead, but are now instead mulling over who will replace Jacinda Ardern.
Deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson has already ruled himself out.
Ministers Chris Hipkins, Michael Wood, Megan Woods and Kiri Allan are considered possible contenders - but no-one has publicly declared their candidacy.
Labour's caucus will gather at Parliament on Sunday to vote for their next leader.
The successful candidate will need the support of two-thirds of the caucus.

I don't think it matters who replaces her. The policies will not be changed and that is what the problem is. They should review and revise the divisive, undemocratic, policies they have implemented but they are not going to stop now... 3 waters, co-governance, He Puapua, separate Maori Health, Law and Education, and the replacement of Democracy with tribal Tikanga, are all in their grasp as long as they remain the government. That's why they have to go, and the leadership is only of passing interest.
