After a weather-affected final day of round-robin at Tauranga Golf Club for the New Zealand Women's Interprovincials, the semi-finalists for today were finally found.
North Harbour and Auckland locked up their spots in Saturday's playoffs with a round to spare, going through the round-robin undefeated. Manawatu Wanganui and Bay of Plenty join them in today's semi's after a tense final day.
Auckland and North Harbour have been unflappable all week and are undefeated after six straight wins. Auckland claims the top seed with six contest wins and 26 games, while North Harbour finished a game point behind.
Auckland and Bay of Plenty will play a rematch of their final round-robin match yesterday afternoon in the first semi-final this morning. Auckland prevailed against the hosts 4 – 1 at Tauranga Golf Club this afternoon and will go into today's semis full of confidence.
It was a nerve-wracking day for the home team, who had to play the top two seeds.
Bay of Plenty also lost to North Harbour this morning, 3.5 – 1.5, and needed half a point this afternoon to ensure they weren't stuck in a log jam of districts who could have finished with four contest wins and 17 games.
Thankfully, Bay of Plenty number two Taylor-Rose Perrett managed to hang tough and secure a 2&1 win, sending the hosts through to the final four.
Bay of Plenty captain and number three, Penny Smith, says it's a relief to be playing today, but they're confident they can reset and take it to the tournament favourites.
'It was a really tough day out there. The rain and wind were tough to deal with and consumed quite a lot of our energy. We're just extremely proud to do what we needed to do this afternoon to still be in with a shot. We're excited for what tomorrow can bring at Omanu; we're really looking forward to getting back there.”
'It would be absolutely incredible to win. Especially given that the men are in the semi too, doing the double would be awesome. We're just going to give it our best and have fun tomorrow. Hopefully, that's good enough. We'll see what the day brings.”
North Harbour defeated a young Wellington outfit this afternoon, 4 – 1, to lock up the second seed placing and set up a clash with Manawatu Wanganui, who they are yet to play this week.
Manawatu Wanganui came into the final day on Thursday in control of their destinies, needing two wins from two to advance.
They beat Hawke's Bay Poverty Bay this morning 4 – 1, meaning they needed to beat Canterbury this afternoon. They did that comfortably by a 4.5 – 0.5 margin, meaning they advanced ahead of the handful of teams vying for the final two places.
Manawatu Wanganui number three Lisa Herbert says the team is immensely proud of their efforts.
'We knew the best way to secure our spot was to have two wins today. We didn't want to leave our fate at the mercy of countbacks. To have a couple of wins was our goal, and to achieve it was fantastic.
'Obviously, it would be very special to get a couple more wins and get the job done. We always come away to this event with the intention of winning; if we can do that tomorrow, we'd be extremely happy.”
After their couple of losses today, Bay of Plenty finished a game point ahead of Taranaki and Otago, who finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
There was the potential for a five-way tie for third at points throughout the day, highlighting how close the competition can be in the exciting match play format.
Auckland plays Bay of Plenty at 7.30am today off the first, while North Harbour plays Manawatu Wanganui off the tenth.
