National holds firm on raising superannuation age

National's Christopher Luxon has committed to raising the age of superannuation should the party get into power.

The party intends to lift the age of eligibility from 65 to 67, despite a recent report from the Retirement Commission recommending the age stays the same.

The report says the commission has concerns that raising the age might disadvantage manual workers and groups with lower life expectancies, including Māori and Pasifika.

Luxon says increasing the age would be done gradually and the party was giving people 15-20 years' notice.

But it needs to be done, he told Morning Report.

"Every decade people live 1.3 years longer. It's not an unreasonable thing and other countries have already fully adopted 67 as a retirement age.

"It's the sensible, pragmatic, practical thing we have to do."

When asked, Luxon was unable to say how much money a person living alone on superannuation was paid a week.

But he says the amount and how they survived off it is a different issue.

"That gets us back to economic mismanagement in this country and why we need a strong economy that drives into higher wages and creates more wealth so we can actually afford to support people in a better way."

Raising the age is "the right thing to do" for the country.

There is going to be a rising level of cost, people are living longer and the country is struggling, he says.

"I've been the leader now for a year. Every quarter it has got worse, our economic outlook and conditions, and the government's done nothing to adjust."

You have just lost my vote mate!!

There is absolutely no way this clown is going to get my vote now!! Any change in retirement ag should be put in place on 16 year Olds. People in their 40s for example, have already made life choices by saving hard for their retirement at 65. If those people then have to work longer, they may have decided to make different choices, knowing they had longer to save. Completely unfair!! I'd be okay though, even at the 15 year notice period.

This is understandable........

.....if it is phased in over at least a few years....we all have equal opportunity to save and make good decisions for retirement...or not. There are other benefits available for those in genuine difficulty and probably should be, but as equal citizens under the Treaty of Waitangi and laws of New Zealand, we need to be more reliant on individual decisions we make as individuals and not to rely wholly on government benefits....

Great Idea.

Totally agree with this. Bring it on.

Totally right!

Follow the rest of the world and retire at 67. You could choose to retire earlier and fund it yourself of course. But we need to dig ourselves out of the fiscal mess that we are in, not just for our generations, but the next few. Modern medicine costs money, but makes us live longer, but it has to be paid for somehow. Everyone screaming out for handouts these days, but not prepared to do the hard mahi to pay for it. Time to man and woman up!!

This clown is discussing National superannuation policy in public with no knowledge of the current superannuation payments. Must have spent a lot of time working through this idea to get to 67.

Inevitable

Everyone is living longer. It’s inevitable. Race doesn’t come into it. Personal responsibility dictates lifespan.

Very well put. 100% agree with you but would also add in some hereditary complications that are out of people's control. Personal responsibility is fast becoming a thing of the past and is so wrong to be lacking or in some cases non existent in society today.
