More rain is expected accross the counry this week as a low moves in.

MetService says a ridge of high pressure will be departing to the east on Tuesday, as a broad low and a series of associated fronts move over New Zealand late Tuesday through Wednesday.

"This low brings rain and strong north to northwest winds to much of the country during this time," says a MetService spokesperson.

"During Tuesday and Wednesday, there is moderate confidence that rainfall accumulations with reach warning criteria in central and southern Westland, also Fiordland, with confidence reducing to low for northern Westland and Buller.

"In addition, there is low confidence that northwest winds may reach severe gale in exposed places of Canterbury High Country, Wellington and southern parts of Wairarapa late Tuesday and early Wednesday."

The MetService says the low is followed by a showery southwest flow across the country for Thursday, which eases on Friday as a ridge moves onto New Zealand front the west.
