The Tauranga Harbour ferry service is set to continue over the cruise ship season.
Mainstreet Downtown Tauranga spokesperson Sally Cooke says it's exciting to be able to see this service roll out across the cruise ship season.
'We had our fingers crossed Tauranga residents and tourists would support the initiative and, based on the success of the first trial day, our friends at Tauranga Water Transport have agreed to continue the service over the season.
'It is fantastic news as this is a unique way for cruise ship passengers to experience Tauranga Moana and enjoy both Downtown Tauranga and Mount Mainstreet.”
The ferry service will run regular departures between Salisbury Wharf at the Mount and The Strand on the Tauranga waterfront on most cruise ship days.
Tourism Bay of Plenty general manager Oscar Nathan says the 20-minute trip is a convenient and relaxing way to cross the harbour.
'This is a great example of how tourism can be a valued aspect of our destination, to locals and visitors alike.
'Not only does this service allow users to gain a different perspective of our beautiful harbour from the water - it's also an effective transport option that reduces the number of vehicles travelling on our roads, particularly during the busy peak visitor season.”
Mainstreet Downtown Tauranga is also employing cruise ship ambassadors to ensure the passengers who catch the ferry have a good understanding on what's on offer.
'We want to ensure visitor experience is top of the agenda for the cruise ship passengers. How they are welcomed, what they are told about our city and helping them with their needs and enquiries will all ensure passengers have a great experience while they are here,” says Sally.
'The Tauranga Water Transport team are experienced and super friendly - we're sure passengers will love the experience.”
Mount Mainstreet destination marketing manager Claudia West hopes Tauranga residents will also continue to book and enjoy ferry rides between Tauranga and the Mount, taking advantage of the special locals rate when they book online.
'Quite a few of the cruise ships are in Tauranga over weekends in November and December and, of course, over the busy Christmas and New Year period.
'What a great way to enjoy a visit to the Mount, a walk up or around Mauao, or to get to festive functions.”

Ferrying internationals to half dead town and construction is awful. When I knew cruise passengers come here I would recommend they take a tour to Rotorua etc. Or local tours . If not then locally shop in the mount, walk round or up the mount etc . Recommended to not go to down town.
Hilarious

Declaring something a success based on one trial day! That's like something the Council would come up with. Hey, if you get a few Covid riddled cruisers off one boat and onto another to come and look at a ghost town good on yer. Can't help thinking this is delusional.
I Agree Kancho

I said to my dear Wife, how disappointing it must be for them to come to 'The City of Tauranga '. Filth and empty buildings with congested roads. We must be the laughing stock of the Bay. How embarrassing to see international wealthy visitors coming to Tauranga.
