MetService advises that a ridge of high pressure will lie slow-moving over New Zealand through Monday.

"But on Tuesday a low is expected to move down from the subtropics bringing rain to the upper North Island," says a MetService spokesperson.

"Another low looks likely to follow on Thursday."

On Tuesday and Thursday, MetService says there is low confidence of significant heavy rain meeting warning criteria over Northland, Auckland, Coromandel Peninsula and western Bay of Plenty.

On Thursday, there is also low confidence of severe easterly gales over the northern half of the North Island.
