A loss and a win for New Zealand teams at the Nations Cup squash event in Tauranga with the ‘B' team or Wildcards being defeated by the highly rated English, but the two big stars for Aotearoa, Joelle King and Paul Coll cleaning up Australia.

In the best of seven sets, up to seven points with a power play at the Trustpower Arena King defeated Jess Turnbull 7-5, 7-1, 5-7, 7-1 in 30 minutes and said it was good to start well.

'It's always a bit special when we play the Aussies. Today was the perfect start for us, two good wins, it was good to get a good run and I'm looking forward to the next match,” said King ranked No 5 in the world who felt the scoring format didn't make things easy on court.

'It puts a lot more pressure on you. You actually think a lot when you think of all the scenarios you could use, they could use, it's actually mentally tiring. It's been interesting watching the other players with what they are doing. I think tomorrow everyone will be more on to it with what they what they're doing.”

And King is up against a tough opponent in the next round on Friday night, Hollie Naughton for Canada.

'She beat me last time (Commonwealth Games semifinal). It will be a tough match. She's been playing well, I've been playing well. I think we'll leave it all out there, it's just a day-by-day, trying not to think too big or too small and just enjoying the whole thing.”

Coll beat an old rival his past, Rex Hedrick 7-4, 7-3, 7-5, 7-4 in 36 minutes including some long rallies on the state-of-the-art glass court to seal the 2-0 New Zealand

Earlier in the day the Kiwi wildcards were up against two of the best as women's world No 8 Sarah-Jane Perry scored a 7-5, 7-4, 7-1, 7-4 , 25 minute win over New Zealand Commonwealth Games rep Kaitlyn Watts ranked 88th .

Meanwhile Mohamed ElShorbagy currently fourth in the world had a 4-1 victory against Lwamba Chileshe, 7-1, 3-7, 7-4, 7-1, 7-0 in 25 minutes.Chileshe with a ranking of 99 said the step up against ElShorbagy was huge.

'I tried not to show him too much respect on court, which is hard as he's such a great guy on and off the court, a legend of the sport. I tried to treat him as a normal player and it worked in the second, but the pace in which Mo (Mohamed) plays, I can definitely feel it. It's a step up from my level,” said 23-year-old Chileshe.

In the opening match of the competition Canada scored a 2-0 win over Scotland with Hollie Naughton, the Commonwealth Games silver medallist beating Lisa Aitken 4-0 and David Baillargeon 4-3 against Greg Lobban.

And the European team of Nele Giles from Belgium and Sebastien Bonmalais (France) defeated the United States. Giles beat Olivia Clyne 4-1, while Bonmalais took just over an hour to account for Timothy Brownell 7-5, 7-2, 6-7, 3-7, 7-3.
