NZ national weather - a ridge of high pressure

WeatherWatch reports that a ridge of high pressure covers New Zealand today bringing mainly settled weather.

"A big low to the northeast of the North Island looks to stay away but it will bring light showers in the east," says a WeatherWatch spokesperson.

For Northland, Auckland, Waikato and Bay of Plenty, the weather forecast is partly cloudy with southeasterly winds, tending southwest in the evening. Northland has a few showers especially in the east. Temperature highs today for these four regions is between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius.

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Sun and some high cloud, southeasterly winds. Afternoon westerlies for north Taranaki.
Highs: 12-16

Eastern North Island
A mostly cloudy day with a few showers or drizzle patches, drying out in the evening. Southeasterly winds, winds tend more easterly for Wairarapa.
Highs: 13-15

Wellington
Plenty of high cloud, some mid level cloud too. East to southeasterly winds.
Highs: 14-15

Marlborough & Nelson
Mid and high level cloud, easterlies for Marlborough, afternoon northerlies for Nelson.
Highs: 14-15

Canterbury
Morning cloud breaks to sun and high cloud, east to northeasterly winds quite fresh about the coast in the afternoon, perhaps even strong.
Highs: 13-19

West Coast
Mostly sunny, some high cloud for North Westland / Buller. Fiordland has some cloud which thickens northwards later in the day or overnight. A few light showers eventually move into Fiordland. Light winds.
Highs: 15-18

Southland amd Otago
Sunny, some high cloud later in the day. Light winds tending onshore in the afternoon, fresh afternoon northeasterlies for coastal Otago.
Highs: 15-21
