Mums, dads and young children alike came out to enjoy the sunshine at Memorial Park in Tauranga today – but they were all met with an unexpected surprise.
For a reason one can only suspect as a slight case of ‘fountain tampering', the Memorial Park fountain was overflowing with bubbles.
Tom Verran, 3, had no qualms in getting his hands into the bubbles. Photos by Tracy Hardy.
The bubbles were an instant hit with many children, who found great pleasure in scooping handfuls of the bubbles out of the fountain.
Among the young bubble fans was three-year-old Tom Verran who says the bubbles were 'cool for standing on”.
Tom's mother says the fountain was also filled with bubbles yesterday.

Watch the fun police move in

It's a wonder Council communications haven't got involved and ordered security guards. You can't be too careful you know. And God forbid the fountain will overflow pouring harmful soap into the estuary??? Quick, get onto the regional council and maybe civil defence as well. Remember the panic over the rail bridge footway when the previous CEO had security guards posted at either end. What did that lot cost us???

This happens periodically.Apparently not too good for the pump mechanism. Probably somewhat akin to some council meetings - all froth and bubble.
Purple bubbles are more fun

Most likely ordinary dish washing liquid. At least they didn't drop some Condy's crystals and make neat purple bubbles like used to be put into the fountain in Hamilton every capping week. If the kids get a rash, means they are not washed often enough ;-)
Phailed not far off ...

Phailed is actually, sadly, on the button. Given half a chance the fountain would be closed off, guards and all. Soap in the harbour - heaven forbid. Was a few years ago a budget of $30,000 was put to Council to reduce the height in the flower, along with signage advising of the risks of 'having fun'.
