BOP warned to watch out for heavy rain

The heaviest falls are expected on Saturday and Sunday.

Heavy rain is being forecast for parts of the north and east of the North Island today.

A weather watch issued for the region has now been upgraded to a warning.

"A complex area of low pressure to the northwest of New Zealand directs a moist northeasterly flow onto the North Island," says a statement from the MetService.

"This low is expected to move slowly southeast and move onto the North Island on Sunday. Some northern and eastern areas may receive warning amounts of rain.

"At this stage it looks like the north of Gisborne, Bay of Plenty and the Coromandel Peninsula will receive the largest accumulations.

"People are advised to stay up to date with forecasts in case any of these Watches are upgraded to Warnings or further areas are added."
