Kawerau mill workers will be voting on a pay offer this morning.

"The Pulp and Paper Workers Union Kawerau has received notice via the media that Essity has accepted the Employment Relations Authority's recommended pay offer, which followed several days of facilitated bargaining," says the Pulp and Paper Workers Union.

Union secretary Tane Phillips says members will discuss the deal on Wednesday morning.

"We received the recommendation from the Employment Relations Authority on Tuesday afternoon.

'Members will vote on the offer today and we will make a further statement following that meeting.”

One hundred and forty-five workers at Essity's Kawerau mill were locked out more than five weeks ago after the company refused to offer a pay deal which meets the rising cost of living, says a Pulp and Paper Workers Union spokesperson..

The union had rejected an offer of three per cent increases for three years.

Essity general manager Peter Hockley says subject to the union and employees accepting the deal, Essity planned to resume production at the Kawerau mill on Thursday, September 15.

"It's now up to the union and employees to decide whether to accept the Employment Relations Authority's recommendations or not."

The union had been in pursuit of a seven per cent pay increase to match inflation.

Essity has withdrawn all legal claims against the union. It had earlier threatened to sue 67 staff for more than half a million dollars in damages.

Essity is one of the world's largest hygiene and health companies and its brands include Purex, Sorbent, Libra and Handee.

Kawerau is the last remaining paper production and manufacturing plant in the country supplying nearly 50 per cent of the market.
