Community input wanted on land reclassification

A cultural and historic centre that will play a key role in providing economic, educational and tourism opportunities for Tauranga needs community input to help take the next step.

A partial reclassification of reserve land is needed to enable Ngāi Tamarāwaho and the Pukehinahina Charitable Trust to develop the Pukehinahina Gate Pā Cultural and Historic Centre on part of the Gate Pā Recreation Reserve.

Tauranga City Council is encouraging people to have their say on a proposal to reclassify part of the land on Cameron Road from Recreation Reserve to Historic Reserve, in accordance with the Reserves Act 1977.

The partial reclassification proposal is for approximately 20 per cent of the reserve, or 0.615 hectares. The rest of the reserve (about 2.385 hectares) will remain as recreation reserve.

This piece of land is located at 1085 Cameron Road, Gate Pā and is the site of the former Gate Pā Bowling Club.

The reserve is Crown-owned land which is managed by Council and protected under the Reserves Act. The reserve is not required by Council for any other projects.

Commission chair Anne Tolley says it's important the community has the chance to share their views on the reclassification proposal.

'The Battle of Gate Pā played a key role in the history of our region and we believe the proposed Pukehinahina Gate Pā Cultural and Historic Centre would not only bring that part of our shared heritage into sharp focus, but contribute significantly to community wellbeing by providing economic, educational and tourism opportunities.

'The proposed site is close to schools, businesses and the Kōpurererua Valley Reserve, and it's in the centre of the Te Papa Peninsula, where an extra 15,000 people will make their home over the next 30 years.”

The proposed partial reclassification area is shown in purple and labelled as 'Proposed Area'.

Tauranga City Council chief financial officer Paul Davidson says the reclassification, if approved, will see the commencement of lease discussions with the hapū and the trust, followed by public notification once a proposed lease is agreed.

'If the partial reclassification is confirmed, Council staff will initiate discussions with Ngāi Tamarāwaho and the Pukehinahina Charitable Trust on the conditions that would be required to lease the land for the purposes of the cultural and historic centre.”

How the community can have their say:

The consultation on the reclassification ends at 5pm, Wednesday, October 12, 2022.

Following the consultation, Council staff will collate all the submissions in preparation for a hearing on November 7.

Deliberations will take place on November 28, and a decision on the proposal is expected before Christmas 2022.

I think it would be a far better option as it's literally green field development plenty of open space . I believe it's planned to be a commemoration site so a concentration of effort etc would get perhaps a better result.

I think...

... it's a good idea. Our history IS important and we should all be aware of the debt we owe to people who died making our way of life possible. But I won't be submitting to the committee on this. Queen Anne's track record has shown that they will ignore whatever is submitted and do what they want anyway. Why waste time?

Sorry, but

It's a done deal - look at the money that has already been spent on the design!! As usual, the so called council consultation and requested ratepayer input is NOTHING more than a SOP!

More money for nothing

Just more money to be spent for no benefit at all. We consult which means we are doing what we want but feel it best to allow you to say something that will be ignored. Where is all this money coming from ?

You make a very valid point. I do however back Kancho's idea. Much better place for it.

It's been so long now, we need to reclassify the term "local council".

I read a while back that TCC and Western bay are putting up cash but two sites are to be as developed must mean a lot more cash to find . No idea if iwi are a major contributor somehow I doubt it. Or is the government splashing the cash ?

Hmmm

Why can this not be a part of the museum being forced onto us? History belongs in a museum.

Who is Paying?

Why the secrecy and failure to advise the ratepayers - WHO IS PAYING FOR THIS?
