Writing workshops in Maketu

A weekend of writing workshops is being planned in Maketu for women who want to find their voice or explore the collaboration between writing in Te Reo Māori and English.

Maketu writer Angie Belcher says while there are often workshops in the wider Bay of Plenty, Maketu often misses out.

"Likewise, there is very little happening locally which encourages Māori women to write or to guide those with te reo on ways to use their skills and language creativity to tell their own stories," says Angie.

Workshop speakers include 'word wizard', poet, editor Jenny Argante, whārePR founder and CEO Bridgette Tapsell (Ngati Whakaue,Ngāti Pikiao), author Rebecca Larson, Māori advisor and translator Justin Kereama (Tūhoe), and Debbie McCauley (Ngāti Kirimā). Debbie is known for her writing which communicates New Zealand historical events and traditional narratives.

The workshops are for all women regardless of age or ability.

"It's actually heaps of fun to explore your creativity especially with a friend or family member," says Angie who is hoping there will be intergenerational groups attending.

Pre-workshop drop-in sessions will be available for those who feel hesitant as well as post-workshop sessions for further mentoring.

These workshops are possible due to the generosity of Chloe Wright and The Wright Family Foundation.

The workshops, which are being held in the Maketu Community Centre on September 17 and 18 are free to students, beneficiaries and anyone living in the Maketu area. A donation of $10 per day is suggested for those outside the area.

To register your interest in attending one, two or all of the sessions and for more information contact [email protected] or text 02102488981.
