Uffindell in ‘good shape’ despite investigation

National's Todd Muller has been texting suspended Sam Uffindell 'every second or third day”, as the investigation into the Tauranga MP's past behaviour drags on.

Muller says Uffindell, who was elected in June, remained in 'pretty good shape” so far. Muller is MP for the Bay of Plenty electorate and a 'friend and supporter” of Uffindell.

'I've known him for a few years and I've just supported him as any friend would do,” Muller says.

He says he wouldn't be sharing details or advice shared 'between friends”, but told reporters on Tuesday there had been no discussion of Uffindell resigning in the midst of the investigation into his behaviour at high school and university.

Originally, National leader Christopher Luxon says the review – led by QC Maria Dew – would take just two weeks. But those two weeks have come to an end and the National Party now says it will take another 'couple of weeks”.

Uffindell, who had been in the National Party caucus for less than two months, remains suspended from caucus.

Luxon says he was 'probably a bit ambitious” to say the review would be complete in two weeks.

But he stood by the time it was taking to complete the investigation and says it was right that Uffindell remain suspended from the party during the entire process.

While Uffindell is sitting in a political purgatory, with National MPs talking to him as 'friends” rather than colleagues, Luxon insisted the new MP was still doing his job.

'As I understand it, he's doing some work in the constituency,” Luxon says. 'And, there will be a resolution shortly.”

Luxon says his latest update from Dew's investigation indicated no further allegations had arisen against Uffindell. The investigation was launched when a former flatmate of Uffindell's alleged on RNZ that he continued his bullying at the University of Otago.

She says she once had to hide from him in her bedroom, while he banged on the door shouting obscenities at her. Uffindell disputed this accusation, but admitted to assaulting a boy while at high school.

Questions about Uffindell's suitability as an MP started when Stuff reported details of his, and three other year 11 students', attack on a 13-year-old. The victim says they entered his dorm room in the middle of the night and used wooden bed legs to hit him, leaving him bruised.

Luxon and Uffindell says he had been open about his time at King's College and had disclosed it during the National Party selection process. But Luxon wasn't told about it – despite former and current party presidents Peter Goodfellow and Sylvia Wood being informed.

Luxon says Dew was 'really focused” on the flatting accusation.

He says the party would also look into improving its selection process and was focused on strengthening its code of conduct ahead of the 2023 election.

Hang In There

Hang in there Sam. I voted for you and I don't expect my vote to be wasted as did the majority of Tauranga. This crap will eventually roll over and you'll be seen as the good leader you are. Let he who didn't muck up as a teenager throw the first stone. Years of Chinese whispers.

A self-inflicted wound.

A whole heap of pain for the National Party could have been avoided if they had been open and up-front before the election. When Sam was asked about regrets he should have responded then and there. Politicians seem to think that the electorate is comprised of dimwits who can't have the truth. Few of us are unblemished and most of us understand the mistakes of youth. We also realize that some things are more serious that others. If you run for public office you should be aware that your sins will find you out and it may affect other people as well as yourself. Tell the truth and shame the Devil.
