Tauranga Libraries’ free digital services expand

Tauranga City Libraries members can now borrow newly released music, bestselling eBooks, the latest in comic books, TV, and the largest and most diverse collection of STEAM content available in a digital service, all on their computer, phone, tablet and TV, all thanks to their library card.

The addition of Hoopla to the Tauranga City Libraries digital platform offerings grants library patrons access to more than 900,000 titles, most of which can be downloaded and enjoyed at their leisure.

If they don't have internet access at home, they can come to the library and download their selection, then view or listen wherever they'd like.

Tauranga City Libraries content team leader Michelle Sims says library staff are very excited about the introduction of this new platform and that they count themselves as big fans of the content available.

'Hoopla Digital is another exciting digital platform for us and one that makes available content that you won't necessarily see in your local library, like albums from popular musicians and a massive amount of exclusive STEAM educational content.

'We have comic book fans on our staff who are delighted by what they see and plenty of my colleagues are particularly excited about the broad range of BBC content on there—like Father Brown and Call the Midwife.

'It's such an easy platform to use too, though we're always happy to guide our patrons through the process of accessing these digital platforms from their devices”.

Another exciting new digital addition to the library is Story Box Library, a storytelling platform geared towards younger readers.

Offering short videos that feature interesting storytellers reading a well curated collection of children's picture books, it's already proving a hit with customers.

It's a novel way of engaging kids in stories and library staff are already hearing how handy it's proving on long car trips.

Closed captions are available and there is a growing collection of books presented in Australian Sign Language.

These new additions to the library join an impressive slate of existing digital library platforms. Tauranga City Libraries also offers a dedicated movie and TV streaming service called Beamafilm, two eBook and eAudio-focused services called ePlatform and BorrowBox, and a paywall-busting newspaper and magazine database called PressReader.

You can access Hoopla Digital via the Hoopla Digital mobile app or online at www.hoopladigital.co.nz.

Somebody will be purchasing the material and paying the royalties on it! That somebody is the TCC ratepayers, many of whom don't and never will use the library facilities .......

I pay taxes and Rates and they get used for things that have no benefit to me, whatsoever, (as well as for things that do...). It is part of the cost of living in a community. We subsidize each other so that, overall, we are stronger than if we did everything alone. You may never use the Library (I think that's sad, BTW) but the modern Library is much more than a place to borrow books. If you were to ledger the costs and benefits of our Library, you would be very surprised at the number of adults and children who appreciate it directly and indirectly. I agree with you about not wasting our money, but that is a Management issue, and the current "management" of Tauranga seem to have no respect for "other people's money" anyway.
