Candy striped suits with flashing lights and bells are being used to highlight Kiwi Rail's main message during Rail Safety Week - to keep people off railway tracks.
In the last seven months alone nine people have been killed while trespassing on railway lines, including a death in Otumoetai on August 2.
Using their brains - Andy Nicholson and Azziz Al-Sa'afin bringing attention to Rail Safety Week.
This week's Rail Safety Week campaign is aimed at reducing the amount of trespassing and improving pedestrian safety around the rail network with its slogan - 'use your brain – tracks are for trains”.
The actors and the ex-Wellington Sevens costumes add light relief to a serious message. People have been killed on the railway tracks in Tauranga at both sites the actors visited today – at Matapihi, and on The Strand.
'Our message is to use your brains and focus on what you are doing,” says Jenni Austin from KiwiRail.
'The train drivers can't stop. By the time they see someone step out in front of the train, it's too late to do anything except hit the horn and lean on the brakes.”
It takes a fully laden train moving at speed about 1km to stop, says Jenni.
She says trains can't swerve, and they are travelling faster than they look.
'Use your heads take care of yourself at the crossings,” says Jenni.
'The other message for the young ones is don't be distracted. Turn off the mp3 players, turn the hoodies back, take the time to have a good look and focus on what they are doing.”
Trespassing can include taking short cuts down or across tracks; using tracks as a footpath between stations; loitering around railway property; and committing acts of vandalism in the rail corridor.
Trespassing on rail tracks is the leading cause of railway related deaths in New Zealand. Since 2000, 147 pedestrians have died on railway tracks, of which 126 were classified as trespass.
KiwiRail is also running an online rail safety quiz at www.kiwirail.co.nz , where people can enter a free prize draw to win one of the following: an iPad 2; a family return ticket, plus car, on the Interislander ferry; a family return ticket on one of the KiwiRail scenic train journeys (the Northern Explorer, Coastal Pacific or TranzAlpine); or a $20 iTunes voucher (one of ten).
Rail Safety Week is an annual Australasian event organised in Australia by the Australian Rail Association, and by KiwiRail and the Chris Cairns Foundation in New Zealand. RSW provides an annual focus for raising awareness of rail safety. Every year there is a different campaign and a range of activities to encourage behaviour change and improve rail safety.
Previous campaigns have focused on motorists to try to reduce the number of collisions at public level crossings.
Trespassing is illegal and punishable by up to $10,000.
Associate Transport Minister Simon Bridges says Rail Safety Week is a timely reminder for all drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to be aware of the dangers around rail tracks and crossings.
'We have too many avoidable tragedies on our rail network, so I'm urging everyone to remember this year's Rail Safety Week theme ‘use your brain, tracks are for trains'.
The Government contributes up to $1million per year to upgrade level crossings with warning lights, bells, and barriers. This is made up of $500,000 from the Crown and $500,000 from the New Zealand Transport Agency.
'Of course there is only so much the Government can do,” says Simon.
'It is everyone's responsibility to take time and care in making decisions around train tracks and stations. As we continue to see, this can make the difference between life and death.”
Rail Safety Week runs from 13 to 19 August and is coordinated by KiwiRail and the Chris Cairns Foundation.

Why does nobody mention the truth?

Why is it so hard for society to acknowledge the obvious: people using trains to commit suicide? What is it with these 'activists' that they portrait a need for an education campaign whereas most of the 'accidents' are suicides? Why can't our society not be real and deal with what's obvious? Maybe exactly why these desperate individuals cannot see light at the end of the tunnel. She'll be right. NOT! Talk about it!
Why not

DRIVE THE TRAIN LIKE YOU HAVE A BRAIN? Things a REAL railroad Operation Lifesaver (OL) group would ask!!! 1. Why are all OL directors handpuppets of the railroad or government only giving lip service safety messages? 2. Why nothing is ever mentioned by OL that would cost the railroads a penny on the obviously missing safety equipment and track maintenance work? 3. Where are the crossing safety signals for the trains going too fast with no brakes or steering at 1,000s of crossings? 4. Where are the track video monitors for the trains going too fast with no brakes or steering to get the train stopped IN TIME? 5. Why aren't railroads paying at least half for crossing signals because it's their trains going too fast with no brakes or steering while paying the so-called RR directors millions a year. 6. Why the crossing humps trapping big trucks aren't required to be removed? 7. Why the crossing surfaces aren't wider where if a vehicle fish tails on slick road and is trapped at the edge of the crossing surface trap? 8. Why the train cabs aren't required to be lit up like a Christmas tree with emergency vehicle light bars? LOOK AND SEE!! 9. Why the front of trains aren't required to have air bags or something to soften impacts? 10. Why trains don't have better braking systems? OLIs message now shows train brakes obviously suck. 11. Why there are no bidding invitations on the obviously overcharged crossing projects the tax-payers pay the railroads for. $10,000 just to get the equipment to the sight. TRUCKED IN. 12. Why trains are allowed to run in the fog? 13. Why the crossings aren't lit up so drivers can see the black rail cars across the tracks at night? 14. Why railroads remove and steal signals we paid for on closed re-worked crossings? 15. Why $$$millions$$$ of the rail safety budget we pay in is wasted on needless reworks at crossings preventing signals where needed? 16. Why the railroad isn't required to de-ice crossings before they roll the trains? 17. Why the railroad isn't required to raise their overpasses so big trucks can get under them? The railroad wants to double stack and our road overpasses are too low---no problem WE PAY MILLIONS. 18. Why drug/alcohol tests aren't done on rail crews at crossing/pedestrian collisions? 19. Why railroads are allowed to get off with the train black box , signal black box (if crossing signals are present), and cab video at crossing/pedestrian collisions? 20. Why the fact is hidden that trains kill a few thousand people in 100 million train miles when regular drivers have like ONE death? 21.Why Amtrak passengers aren't required to look at the despicable shape of the crossings before they board the trains? 22.Why train horns aren't blown at private crossings till the last second freezing drivers? 23.Why the railroads track lights can't be at a crossing? 24 .Why railroads need track lights and civilians don't? WAITING FOR OLI/OLI.CA response.
Personal responsibility, a thing of the past ??

All this PC flap and excuses for folk who deliberately flout the laws and go into obviously dangerous and forbidden areas. THEIR choice to risk their lives, pity it so often traumatizes the train driver. Can anyone seriously believe that anyone can't hear/feel the earth shivering approach of many hundreds of tons of steel ?? KNOWING where they are ?? They knew the risk.
