‘No specific safety risk’ following school threats

Update 3.35pm: Police say there is "no specific safety risk" following an investigation of schools in Waikato, Thames and Gisborne.

The investigation comes after multiple North Island schools recieving 'several threats via phone,' leading them to lockdown and evacuate.

A police spokesperson says investigations into the source of the threats are ongoing.

"Police have responded following threats to five North Island schools today," says the police spokesperson.

"The schools were in Waikato, Thames and Gisborne.

"Police have made inquiries into the threats and believe there is no specific safety risk.

"Investigations into the source of the threats are ongoing.

"Police extends thanks to the schools involved for following their emegency procedures, and to the wider school communities for their co-operation."

EARLIER 3.18pm: Thames High School says caregivers or parents can now pick students up from Jack McLean centre, in a post made to Facebook.

EARLIER: 1.07pm: Matamata Intermediate School is requesting parents and caregivers to collect their children at the Smith Street entrance, and to not come onto the school grounds.

EARLIER 12.56pm: Thames High School students are being evacuated due to a "low risk bomb threat," according to a post made on their Facebook page.

A police spokesperson says they are aware of the threats made via phone to "several North Island schools."

"Police are liasing with the schools and making further inquiries," says the police spokesperson.

Matamata Intermediate is being advised to 'stay in lockdown' by police, According to a post on their Facebook page.

Cambridge High School students are also being evacuated on the advice of police, according to their Facebook page.

Lytton High School in Gisborne is also evacuating according to their Facebook page, and is informing caregivers that they can collect students from Lytton Road, but must not enter the school.
